Today, I’m going to talk about a common mistake that a lot of my students have made.
The mistake is to misuse and get confused by the words “spell”
and “pronounce” or “spelling” and “pronunciation.”
So, I’m going to try to explain the difference to you in a quick and easy way.
To spell or spelling refers to the order of the letters in a word.
For example, I could say,
“How do you spell house?”
“House is spelled H-O-U-S-E.”
Those are the letters that make up the word and the order the letters are in.
Now, the word pronunciation or to pronounce…
This refers to the sound of the word when you are speaking.
It does not refer to the way the word is written or
the letters in the word, or the spelling.
The pronunciation only refers to the sound as it’s coming out of your mouth.
An example of a word that many students pronounce incorrectly is virus.
A lot of students pronounce this like ‘veeroos’ or something like that.
